Summary of Position

Each year, the Cornell Club of Boston recruits new alumni volunteers to serve on its elected board of directors. The Club serves over 12,000 alumni in the Greater Boston area, which includes suburbs to the north, west, and south. Board members are primarily responsible for planning events to engage alumni and contribute to the operations and governance of the board of directors.

As an official ambassador of the Cornell Club of Boston, it is important for Board members to feel confident in their ability to formally and informally speak about Cornell and the Cornell Club to a variety of individuals. While it's rare for board members to have to give big speeches, it's still important for board members to be prepared to talk about Cornell to other Cornellians.

Board members have three primary roles: 1) A requirement to plan at least one alumni event per fiscal year; 2) To attend and participate in monthly board meetings in-person or by phone where the board discusses a variety of issues, including events, communications, governance, strategy, and relations with the University; and 3) Collaborating with other board members or non-board members to identify, recruit, and onboard new volunteers.

The Cornell Club of Boston is a working board, meaning all board members have a responsibility to plan alumni events and to engage alumni. The Club is always looking for new alumni to bring to events and to find ways to engage in the life of the University and the Club. Advocating on behalf of Cornell--in person and in writing--is critical to the success of the Club.

Requirements

Prerequisites - Some level of proven volunteer experience within an existing Cornell alumni community, preferably in the Boston area. - Knowledge of the Greater Boston community and Cornell alumni in the area - A commitment to giving back to Cornell and a passion for connecting Cornellians with each other and back to the University! - Each spring, the Club takes nominations for new board members. Our Nominations Committee reviews prospective board members and submits the final slate to the board and then to the membership of the Club, which is all alumni in Eastern Massachusetts. A formal vote is taken at the Club's Annual Meeting in May or June. Service begins on July 1 for a two-year term, with the option of continuing for three terms (max of 6 consecutive years).

Other Meeting Details: Meeting attendance is required but excused absences are understood by the board. If there are more than two unexcused absences in one year, the board has the authority to remove a director from the board. Call-in is an option, and some meetings turn out to be conference calls.

Additional Attendance Requirements: Attendance at our Annual Meeting (in May or June of each year) is expected, but not required.
